ICE storm travel tips

Image
So it's been pretty crazy here for the last couple of months. Between getting stranded Christmas Eve for six hours, in a massive snowstorm, to getting hit again this week with another ice storm. The first of the two storms - gave us over twelve inches of snow for days on end. Christmas was not typical in that most families were not together, because they were stranded and unable to travel. We just took down our Christmas tree last week because we promised our son we'd keep it up until all our family Christmases were done. It almost felt like winter was trailing off until this blasted ice storm hit this week. Again - because I'm 'that' lucky, I worked most days during the storms and ended up traveling home in it all again. Thankfully, I work for a wonderful company that allowed me to close our store so that myself and one employee could go home.  We closed two full hours before the mall did. You know it's serious when two major highways are shut do...

checkin you out...

So when did it happen? When did my son turn into a teenager at the tender age of six - almost seven. The day before yesterday we went to see the SQUEAKQUEL with Alvin and the Chipmunks . It was hilarious to see my son laugh and blurt out kid commentary throughout the film. I love watching him giggle at something. His face lights up. However his face lit up for an entirely different reason earlier that day, and I almost lost it. I tried not to giggle, but he was too cute. We were waiting for our friends to join us at the theater when a young blonde seven-ish little girl walked by. I noticed her doing a double-take at my son and giving him a shy sideways look. I looked down at him and said, 'Dude she was totally checking you out!' He said with a wide grin, 'And I was checking her out mom!' I asked him what that meant and his response? 'It's when you're seeing if you'd make a good couple with someone.' OH. MY. GOSH. First - I st...

Catching up with you...

So I haven't posted since October ... wow! I guess blogging has gone to the wayside with all the projects and work I've been doing. But since Oklahoma has been frozen by a blizzard, I thought I'd take a few seconds to communicate to any of you out there, who still read this little blog. Lots of things have happened in three months. A few for starters: * I was asked to become an asst. manager at my work - so that took me from part-time to full time. (hence no blogging) * My own photography company picked up like crazy. (hence no blogging) * more author events to promote the book (still no time for blogging) * Christmas enveloped our schedule, rushing through the few hours I did have. When I wasn't working or with family, I had to get any shopping done which became non-existent in December. Once December started, my hours changed to accommodate all other shoppers, which left me closing my store at 11 pm and home by midnight. So my husband had the fun chor...

I'm getting old fast

So I found a lump about two weeks ago. A pretty substantially sized lump and it kinda freaked me out. I've only recently started doing self-exams in the last couple of years, and I'll admit I'm not as vigilant as I should be. For the last six months, one breast has been really tender to where I can't even sleep on one side at night. I've always heard cancer doesn't hurt, so I wasn't too concerned about it being the big C. But I have to admit when I found that lump I was so sick to my stomach that I slid to sit in the shower. After a few moments, I stood to wash my hair washed and cleaned enough to get out and dry off with a towel. All the while, my stomach was in a lurch and my hands were shaky. About an hour later, I snapped out of it. I was going to be okay. After all, it was just a little lump. I prayed over it and started the day with determination, not worrying about anything I couldn't control. After handing it to God, I knew it was i...

my little salesman

This is the first year we're taking the leap and joining cub scouts. We're enjoying the culture and activities so much. Right now it's all about selling popcorn, to earn money for our troop. My little guy has always been a great salesman and negotiator. What kid isn't? But after years of listening to me on the phone with clients, I guess it's really soaked in. Two nights ago, he grabbed my cell phone and scrolled through my contacts list. He started by dialing the obvious - his nanas, papas, and immediate family.  He could have just said, "Hey wanna buy something from me," and they would have forked over a few dollars. But he goes all the way with anything he does. His spiel was unbelievable. He even had the features and benefits of the product down pat. And instead of trying to sell the little items, he went for the $50 tins every time with the assumptive close. After our family had run its course, he started scrolling through my phone...

Kanye Shmanye

Twitter was all abuzz last night with the Kanye Controversy. It was the fastest I've seen people respond to something in a while. And why not? I mean, come on how much does one person get to mouth off before facing some backlash? I'm really shocked that MTV didn't cart his butt out of there instantly and treat him like any other protester. If 'joe average' had popped up to take someone's mic and start spurting hurtful words, he would have been tackled and taken into a nice holding cell. Better yet, he wouldn't have even made it to the stage. Why can't the same security, put in place for a reason, take out someone - anyone - with malcontent? It's reported that Kayne spoke with Taylor's mother after the show and somewhat made amends. It's not said that he 'apologized' as far as I've read anywhere online. I. just. don't. get it! My 7th-grade teacher taught me many things, but one thing has stuck with me through...

My DH

After nine years of marriage, one wonders where the time goes and how fast it will fly into the future. You also wonder if there will be any other dimension added to your relationship with your spouse. At this stage, most women I know either really complain about their other half - as they're not in a happy marriage. Or they still have that glow about them when they talk about their DH. I would have to say that we're not your typical couple and that's a good thing in many ways. Our schedules keep us coming and going so much that we don't get a lot of quality time together, but we still strive for our couple-time whereas most just don't care anymore. For me, I don't want to get lazy in my relationship. I want to make sure my husband knows how much I appreciate him and love him, by telling him every day how much I love him. BUT I don't think that's enough. It's easy to say those words to pacify one's partner. The hard part is to ...
