Little Angel Giveaways

So recently I blogged about Roma Downey's new DVD series HERE . To recap, Ms. Roma formerly known as Monica on 'Touched by an Angel' has released an amazing children's series that not only stimulates your preschooler's mind with art, humor, numbers, music, and creative aspects - but also with Biblical truths and foundations. I've got a few giveaways that Roma has graciously sent me for anyone here that would be interested. For those that read, link me to your blog and mention Roma's new series. I'll be checking my stats and will be counting how many hits come from your blog. The bloggers with the most hits will receive one of her very cute and entertaining DVDs. I promise your little pre-schooler will love love love watching as much as my 8-year-old will deny loving it too.

Encouraging Words

It's amazing when my 5-year-old comes home, talking about the history behind MLK day. When I was in Kindergarten, we learned our colors, numbers, and maybe a few words. My son comes home teaching me about rhombuses, arctic animals and their habitats, and about politics. Today, he came home and gave me a history lesson. He said Martin Luther King was a very good man who delivered a speech that he was killed for. I'm sure the teachers tried to give these kids the whole picture of 'I have a dream,' yet this is the part that stuck with my child - 'he gave a speech that he died for...' I tried to impart some wisdom at that moment. Wisdom like that of MLK and what he tried to stress on that day he died. That we are all created equal even though some people judge others because of their background, race, or religion. That we all should work as a human race to improve our society with peace and respect. That we should NOT judge others based on their color, ...

Five years ago

Monday, March 10th, 2003, I proceeded to stand up at the end of my sales meeting to go back upstairs to my office. Something in my huge belly creaked, popped, and groaned just enough to keep me from standing. Most of those around me asked if they could help me stand because I was stuck in my chair. Me, being tough, brushed it off as nothing and thanked them for their offers. I got my fat self off my chair to waddle to the staircase. Thankfully, one of the men I worked with, also a father, was wise enough not to let me take the stairs back up to our floor. He escorted me to the elevator, swiped his ID card, and walked me to my little cubicle. I was to have a ride-along that day with a new rep, who was sick and coughing. I'd been riding with him three days prior and unfortunately was now thoroughly congested. I walked to his cubicle and told him I would meet him later as I thought I had a doctor's check-up at the hospital. He asked to drive me, because like everyon...

An Art History Lesson

I'm fighting the stomach crud this week, and yesterday it was at it's worst. My little one, being as patient as he could, finally started jumping up on the couch to cuddle. This was so sweet and endearing, but his squirming little body was making my stomach hurl. I tried to explain to him how I felt by pointing out a print we have over our mantle. I said, "Honey see that painting above our fireplace? The one with the swirls in the night sky?" "Yes." "Well...that's how mommy's tummy feels and the more you move the more my tummy swirls around. Can you be as gentle as possible when you make any moves?" "Yes, of course...what is that up there, Mom?" So we got into the history of things...like... "A long time ago we didn't have all this technology. Before we were born...there weren't camera's to take pictures, so artists did a lot of painting to show the world's beauty around them to others. And that pain...

A joyful heart

All parents wonder if we're doing it right. We wonder if we're screwing it up....especially with our first child. My last post is a testament to that first hand, and many of you left me some wonderful comments either at my blog or on some of the communities I'm a part of like: cre8buzz , mybloglog, or myspace . So thanks to you all for your feedback. Each of you had something insightful and supportive to say, which really gave me some insight into the rest of your lives and your parenting. I wanted to give you an update on the chart and it's five lines. Although it is initially what got my son's attention, it's not what's really working for him (note: all five lines are still up).  Each day as he's come home from school, with a smiley on his hand, he's been getting a huge smiley on his chart for the category: OBEYING AT SCHOOL/RIGHT CHOICES. As soon as he's picked up, he can't wait to tell me all the right choices he's made a...

The beauty of life

What do you find beautiful? I think it's different for each and every one of us. Tonight as I sat on my porch, watching my son and husband play soccer in the yard, I realized just how beautiful life can be. If you ever read my other blog, daily blessings , you'll know how blessed I feel on a daily basis. So why was tonight so special? Because my husband and I are so financially strapped that it's not even funny, but no matter how bad that gets...my life is still perfect just the way it is. To hear my son's laughter, and see his smile as he spends time with his parents overshadows all the stresses in my life. Do I wish I still had a job with a stable income? Yes! Would I sacrifice the time away from my son to do so? NO WAY! I left a job, of five years, making over 70K but was becoming so involved at work that I had nothing left over to give my family. Now I work from home, on straight commission. If I don't sell....I don't bring home a paycheck. Some mon...

Having 'that' talk!

I got to spend some quality time with my son today. He didn't have school, and his caregiver had a doctor's appointment. The result? A longer than normal morning spent with my son before my workday started. That is the luxury of my job. I get to arrange my schedule around my life...instead of the other way around. Praise God for that flexibility! Today however was most unusual. When my son was two to three years old, he went through a phase of modeling himself after me. From what I understand all boys want to be just like both parents and try certain behaviors out. It's normal in finding their own way in the world. Part of that phase was to get those little tissue packets and carry them around with him. Those were his "pads" and he would tuck tissues in the waistband of his shorts. I was sort of shocked. It was funny but not so funny that I was laughing all that hard. Other moms have reassured me that their sons went through the same things at ...

rat a tat tat

My son and I were watching a little TV tonight when my husband came home with a surprise for him. He had stopped by to get himself a new pair of drumsticks for his band and bought my son his own kid-sized pair. Currently, they're both in the living room and all I hear is rat tap tap tap....bang bang bang. My husband is teaching my son how to keep a beat in succession of different drum rolls. I'm pretty impressed with how awesome my son is doing. Two weeks ago after my husband was cleaning up the stage, after he and his group were done playing, my little boy ran up to him to check out his drum set. I turned to talk to some friends and the next thing I heard was a very cool drum set. I thought my husband was teaching my son a little about the drums, by doing a drum roll. I turned to watch, and it was my little boy on the drums...making his own sounds! Wow! Were we all surprised to watch my little one up there putting his own beats down, sounding like a real drummer....

Putting Out Flames

Image
Today my mom and son had an activity day. They went to a friend's ranch to visit their horses (notice his cowboy boots), and then made their way to one of the many fire departments throughout the city. Usually when we visit, it's a quick tour. He gets to sit in the truck, and they'll point out all the equipment. We usually go to a different fire station each time to see them all. This time my mom told me that the squad went waaay out of their way to give him the V.I.P. tour. She took many pictures that I just had to post. They let him see all the behind the scenes stuff! They showed him which buttons to push to make the ladder go up and down. Afterwards, fireman climbed up the ladder to wave down at my son. Then they drove around the block with my son up front! He was way impressed! They dragged out the hose to let him hold it and spray the water across their front lawn. He told me that it got too heavy. I can imagine! Then he got the internal ...

First Day of PRE-K

Image
Today was classic and will forever remain in my memory as one of the cutest days I've experienced with my son. Pre-K started Friday, but due to my son's surgery, I didn't start him until today. He needed a full week to recover. His new school starts about a half-hour earlier than Mother's Day Out, so I thought I'd have a problem getting him up and roused. No sir! No sooner did the clock hit 7:30 a.m. and my son was up and raring to go. I heard rustling noises coming through the monitor, so I walked down the hall to peek my head in. I saw an excited child, who'd already dressed himself nicely, but who was pulling up DARK olive green knee socks. Chuckling, I entered to suggest some white ankle socks to match his red shirt and blue cotton shorts. This is what I got: "No...this is a kid's room only, Mom! No Mom's allowed!" Okay? So I left him to his fashion blunder and continued to pack his things up. I told him he had to eat a b...

Toddler sippy cups and more

For years, there have been concerns about plastics and toxins leaking into our systems. The question to eat microwave dinners or not....the dilemma of freezing bottled water. Both concerns are valid and potentially dangerous. My aunt saw a disturbing report on the national news last week at the airport. She was waiting to board and saw a picture on TV of a sippy cup, that looked like the one my son has used. She focused on the newscast to see what it was about and was immediately concerned. The newscaster was telling of a new report linking plastic sippy cups to neurological disorders in infants and toddlers. It reported that as adults we're less vulnerable to the dangers of bad plastics, but our kids are in danger. I googled to see what I could and found a lot of disturbing reports out there. I found out not only was it neurological disorders that I needed to be concerned with, but genetic/fertility issues also came into play. It's way overdue to wean my son fro...

Prayer mixed with a little Ozzy

When I was getting out of the shower this morning, my husband rushed in and said, "Come here, you've got to hear this!" I dried off and listened from my room to my son saying the sweetest prayers on his karaoke machine. It wasn't hard to hear since he had it turned it to the loudest volume setting. I heard: "Dear Jesus, Thank you for dying on the cross for me. You rose again and you love me...thank you. My mom likes roses and she saves them after they die! Oh and please bless 'Abensengya' (that's the little boy we sponsor in Africa). Give him a house with bricks instead of mud and sticks...oh please give him a garage door and food! He doesn't have food like I do because he's on the other side of the earth, where its dusty and dirty. But the moon is a dusty surface, and it's okay. Thank you, Jesus, Amen!" I was amazed at his prayer and then all of the sudden he broke out in: AAAAAlll Aboard! Haahaaahaaa! I-I-I-I....cr...

all grown up

My son's first day of children's church was today! He woke up with a start and ran into my room, yelling, "I get to wave palms today mom!" What a wonderful way to get introduced to big kids' church -- by walking through the service waving palms for Palm Sunday! It was so exciting for him and me too! He normally never attended nursery, because 'that was for babies!' --and because weekends were reserved mommy and daddy time. He chose to be with us, and we didn't mind at all. We sat in the overflow area, instead of the sanctuary for four long years. This was monumental in two ways today. Today my little one was so grown up and simply walked to his class without a look back, and mom and dad got to sit "IN" church and listen to a sermon. Hallelujah! Today was a great day! Pardon the palm over my son's face, but I never print his full face on my blogs....only a profile or a back shot. It's a privacy thing, that I'm sur...

New cell phone rules

Twice now my son has grabbed my cell phone while I've been... let's just say indisposed. The first time he actually blurted out, "No, she can't come to the phone...she's going poop!" Thank the Lord that it was just a friend on the phone at that time. Well....this morning I was sitting on my throne doing what most people have to do, from time to time, and I heard my cell phone ringing from the other room. I cringed inwardly hoping upon hope that he wouldn't answer my phone. Yeah, right...like that's gonna happen. So of course, he answers and talks for a few minutes while walking into the bathroom. Thankfully, he doesn't let it slip what my current activities were. I grabbed the phone from him, put my fingers to my lips to shush him, and answered as professionally as I could, "This is Kim, how can I help you?" It was a client who needed something pretty important and in a timely manner. I apologized for my son's little vo...

Manual for Motherhood

Image
This is a re-post from my other site at www.blessed1.wordpress.com...hope you enjoy! No one ever really prepares you for being a parent. The standard phrase I got when I was pregnant was, “Oh get your sleep now while you can!” or they might say, “Good luck you’re going to need it!” Even the important people in my life never truly passed on enough wisdom for me to have a handle on how it’s supposed to work. I always wondered why there wasn’t a handbook that will tell you things like: When your son is potty trained, stay alert. He’ll still shoot the pea out between the lid and the toilet when he sits down. Have a rag handy for quick catches! or No matter how hard you try to get your child to sleep through the night (and they finally do)…..don’t relax just yet. Then the nightmare phase is coming and it starts all over again. All I have to say is thank God for my mom. She may not have had any written instructions for me but she taught me the basic foundation by example. OH y...

The miracle of a child

Image
Every child is a blessing. A gift God bestows upon us to shape into a responsible adult. A child to protect, love, and provide for. That child is helpless without us. I know every loving mom out there, doesn’t know how she got by before having kids. Personally, for me, I can’t imagine my life without my child and possible future children-if that’s God’s will. My husband and I tried for only a short year to have children before we went to a fertility specialist. We just wanted to be proactive — to see if we were both capable of bearing children. We were both young and healthy, and I never imagined I’d receive the most horrible news a female could have dropped in her lap. After running a few tests, the top fertility specialist in the state told us that between my husband and me—we would most likely never conceive on our own. He laid out some fertility solutions, and followed up with, “Even with treatment, chances would be slim that you’ll conceive.” Wow, talk about black and white....

priorities in motherhood

Often I hear myself answering, YES, to a lot of little questions by my little boy. He's at the age that he's just talking a mile a minute and asking millions of questions. As I'm doing yard work or housework, and I hear 'isn't that right mommy?' - I just mmhmm while working. I remember my mom telling me a story from my childhood. She recalled it a few years ago, but it's becoming quite the center of my thoughts lately. She told me that she was in the kitchen, and I came bounding in at the bold age of 3, talking and talking. She absent-mindedly answered yes, to what she thought was a harmless question. The next thing she heard was me yelling out the front door, "THANKS MOM!", and she had to run to catch up with me. She didn't know that her 'yes' was permission to go across the neighborhood to a friend's house. I think all of us moms get caught up in our daily activities and automatically respond to our little one's q...
