Summer Lovin' Activities

Image
This has been one of the busiest summers I can remember.  As my kid gets older, there are more parties, interests, and activities he's delving into which means more drive time, which I'm happy to do.  I know my ever-changing Manual for Motherhood is filling up, as I grow as a mom with my child's different stages. Every phase, I marvel at how blessed I am to be my kid's mom. This summer, we decided to try something different. Lil' T is at the age, where church intramural teams have aged out, and team sports for school don't start till next year. So he's been in limbo, without something motivating him to stay active.  I didn't want him sitting inside all summer, on his computer playing Minecraft. As we were researching our options, a friend recommended kayaking. Oklahoma City has a training site for top rowing athletes, in which they train Olympic athletes.  Our friend told us about their program for kids, which seemed like a good introduction ...

Official start of MY Spring

Today is the day. My son gets to meet his Soccer coach and his T-ball coach this morning! It doesn't quite feel like Spring until he's in his soccer jersey running the field, well that and the frigid weather makes it not so springy. Is that a word? I think it's going to be better for me than him. Being cooped over the winter was harder than usual this year because he's gained another year and not as easily entertained. I can't just put a toy in front of him and expect him to marvel like he did when he was tiny. Now it's whining, "I want to doooo something" or "When can we go outside?" When that doesn't produce anything fun, it becomes silly name-calling or crying fits out of boredom to push my buttons. What he doesn't realize is that the silly name-calling gets to be worse. "Hey, Mrs. Jiggly Pens...whatcha doing?" What the? A) What kind of name is that? and B)'NO woman wants to be called Jiggly anyt...

Hockey Mania

So my husband started taking my son to hockey games this last October or November. I don't remember which month, but it was toward the end of the year. My dad went with them one time, so it was a guy's night out. My son came home with his own wooden Blazers hockey stick that night, with the Marty Standish's name and number on it. My husband is a sports anything enthusiast, from little league, football, bowling, baseball...etc. I think you get the idea. My son is going to be just like him. He's already rain man when it comes to games he's attended and the sports and team info. He can rattle off every Blazer game he's been to, who they played, and the score. For Christmas, my husband's grandfather sent a nice check for my son's gift. We turned around and went down to the Ford Center to buy him an authentic hockey jersey. It was one he could grow into and still fit when he's like eight or nine. As it stands now, it looks like a short d...

The hard lesson my son learned yesterday

Little boys are always infatuated by what (to put it bluntly) hangs between their legs. They're constantly playing with it or learning new ways to pee with it. My son likes to pee in my mother's lawn, much to her horror. We're trying to break him of that. It's funny...I've spent years breaking dogs of peeing indoors, now I'm reminding him that it's not nice to pee outdoors in Nana's lawn. Needless to say, little boys at this age are trying to figure out what makes them unique and different from girls. They see the obvious differences...long hair vs short, attracted to dolls vs trucks, soft-spoken vs loud boy noises. But the most frequent question I get when it comes to body parts is: "Mommy, how come you don't stand up to go pee?" My answer: "Because boys have pee pee's and girls don't." Lately, he's on to bigger and better questions about things like strangers, or heaven, but yesterday he learned a hard l...

My first day as a 'Soccer Mom'

Image
Nine o'clock came early this morning. My son has been sleeping in most mornings for the last few weeks, due to my need for sleep (I'm trying to get over this upper respritory crud). However, after giving him a little prep talk last night, that he had to wake up before 8 a.m. to make it to his game, he came running down to our room with his digital clock in hand. It's one of those SkySkan Atomic clocks that will tell the accurate time and temperature on its own. He pushed the button, tapped me on the shoulder, and whispered, "Mom! It's 7:30. Get up, I have a soccer game!" I am so tired from this cough and chest congestion, but there's no way I'd miss the honor of being there. Not only was it his first sporting event (Ah! and now it'll never end!), but it was my first day to be a soccer mom. Something I never saw myself as. I never pictured myself as that girl! Before the game, the coach led the team in a prayer of thanks and protec...
