10 days

This summer has flown by. I can't believe my little baby will be in first grade in ten more days. It's so hard to believe he's growing up and then in other ways, I'm blown away that he's only six. Today, when I took him to register for soccer, he also wanted to register for flag football. I asked my friend, who was in charge of the sports camps what each cost was and she told us that for soccer it would be $50 but for flag football, it would be $65. I instantly knew that was more than we really could afford or should spend. I tried to make a game out of it for my son and said, "You do the math - what's 50 + 65?" I was just being flippant. I never dreamed he'd be able to answer. You could see his wheels turning, and his mind calculating. He turned to me and said, "Um, 115 dollars?" Both my friend and I look at each other astounded. Yes, that's my son. A funny social silly kid, with a major brain. I told him we...

Calling for Parent's Input

Okay...I knew it had to happen! My perfect little child, who has been a dream for four and a half years old, is now having disciplinary issues at school. The problem is that he's a little smarter than most kids his age, and although he's not excluded from them in any way, it's harder to communicate when you know how to count to two-thousand and all the others are learning to count to ten. There tends to be a gap. This one child, in his class, who is as smart is obviously going to be an interest to my son. My son feels a bond with him because they can talk on the same level, which I originally was happy about. Except for the fact that this child is not one that makes good choices for himself, and is leading my son down the path to destruction. He and my son are too aggressive with other kids on the playground, and they aren't listening to instruction. His teacher actually called me at home last month. I was shocked that in PRE-K I got a call from his teacher ...

First Day of PRE-K

Today was classic and will forever remain in my memory as one of the cutest days I've experienced with my son. Pre-K started Friday, but due to my son's surgery, I didn't start him until today. He needed a full week to recover. His new school starts about a half-hour earlier than Mother's Day Out, so I thought I'd have a problem getting him up and roused. No sir! No sooner did the clock hit 7:30 a.m. and my son was up and raring to go. I heard rustling noises coming through the monitor, so I walked down the hall to peek my head in. I saw an excited child, who'd already dressed himself nicely, but who was pulling up DARK olive green knee socks. Chuckling, I entered to suggest some white ankle socks to match his red shirt and blue cotton shorts. This is what I got: "No...this is a kid's room only, Mom! No Mom's allowed!" Okay? So I left him to his fashion blunder and continued to pack his things up. I told him he had to eat a b...
