Freelance Fun

Image
From time to time, I freelance for different media outlets or organizations. What I love about photo work is that every day is different.  Your subjects and environment always change. The only thing that stays the same is the eye behind the lens and how the photographer challenges him or herself to tell a new story. Today, I filled in for a local paper, which took me everywhere from downtown Oklahoma City, Norman, to the State Capital.  With today's temperatures which were topping at 99 degrees, I was ready to get home to upload my assignments from the comforts of my air conditioner. Here's a glimpse into my day ... Here's from day 2

I've got the coolest readers ... yeah, that means you!

From time to time, readers will email me photos of themselves, with a copy of my books. I've seen some pretty fantastic pics over the years. A few are displayed here . However, this week I received THE photo of all photos when a reader sent me her idea of what I call book blasting (the art of taking a book and post pics with it everywhere). Below you can see her scuba diving, with a copy of FACING REDEMPTION. And, she was also kind enough to make a video for me. I have been on cloud nine all week!!  I am in awe of her thoughtfulness and creativity. See for yourself ... talk about not being able to put a book down. And you've got to see her video - here at this link .  Or you can watch it here: OKAY --- now here's your challenge.  I'd love for you to top that.  Send me your creative photos at kimberlymckayauthor@gmail.com.  And if you're a tablet reader - no worries ... those count too.  Just make sure the book title can be seen on y...

As I sit ...

Music from 'Farm Story' softly plays in the background, while my son plays - and I work on my photos for my latest client.  (Ok ... so I am taking a few minutes to blog - but I'm still working) I recently stepped down as Asst. Manager at the boutique (store shall remain un-named) at the mall.  Due to the fact that I had to continually keep turning down photo jobs because my store manager wouldn't let me off had me rethinking where I needed to spend my time. I wasn't doing her any good asking off all the time, and the j.o.b wasn't really helping us out that much as far as revenue. The realization hit when telling my son yet one more time that I wouldn't be home for another bedtime because I had to close my store, but that I'd see him in the morning. He looked to me with sad eyes and asked, "Mom, why don't you just stop working so hard and work smarter?" Then the next week a friend dropped by with what I thought was a note.  We hadn...

so here's the deal ...

I promise I've not been out of commission just running around like crazy, which has kept me from sitting let alone blogging. Life since October has been overloaded with everything retail, as I took a full-time job. Unfortunately, this left me unable to creatively unload, which means I've not completely finished my sequel yet. But ... it's almost done. The only thing creative I've been able to do is to take some photography jobs here and there. I've not had much time off from retail-land to work on my company, but I still get enough work that I feel creatively charged. Here's an example of my last commercial shoot. This is one of many billboards that line the highways in Oklahoma City. I love that my work is posted up for everyone to see. Last week I had headshots for some actors who are talking to some L.A. casting directors for 'Sonny With A Chance'.  That was a treat to shoot those pics for their meeting. Next on the docket is a cale...

When I grow up....

Image
I've been stuck in this place lately wondering what I want to be when I grow up...professionally speaking. I've been in sales my whole life essentially since I was five years old, working it at garage sales. I'd assume the sale and direct people to what I thought they needed. This is why I think we've always done so well whenever we have one because we've got a professional garage saler in our midst...ME. Sales are what I'm good at, but it's not what in my heart. They say to do what you love, but I'm always drawn to sales because I can excel at it and provide for the family. Lately, though I've not been excelling at it. I've been stuck in some weird middle ground, where I don't care anymore. I've lost my drive and am left wondering what I should be doing. Doing what I love, writing and photography makes me happy. So here's what I've decided... I have a feeling that my book will be getting published soon, as a small p...

From my shoot on Saturday

Image
Just wanted you all to see the fruit of my labor from Saturday. These are a couple of many of my favorite shots I took. Stop by and let me know what you think.

Babble

Today I'm shooting a friend and her daughter. Well not shooting them...but taking pictures. Every time I say shoot in conversation, I get weird looks so I thought I'd clarify for those that don't know that I love photography. Yesterday was in the '30s and today's supposed to reach 60 degrees. The weather here is nothing but crazy. You never know if it's going to have record highs or an ice storm a day apart from one another. And you wonder why it's called tornado alley and the bible belt. We need Jesus to weather the storms here! I'll post some pics from the shoot on here with my friend's permission later today or tomorrow. I just wanted to wish everyone a happy Saturday. As an update...I thought I'd lost five pounds (remember my new year's post) but I've lost more like two and a half pounds. I didn't set any resolutions to lose weight this year. I only promised myself to eat more healthy and do sweets in moderation. No...

A full day

Image
Yesterday was packed full of activity. My son had his first soccer game of the fall season, and I had my first gig with my new photography business. If you read me regularly, you'll know I never put my son's face or information on my blogs. So I only shot his legs on this one to post. He assisted in six goals yesterday. Pretty good for his first game of the season. He's improved so much since Spring. He was more aggressive in getting the ball away and dribbling down to the goal. When he lost footing, his little teammates were right there to get the ball and score! Good job guys! A friend asked me to shoot at the Oklahoma State Fair Motorcross races. It was a smaller venue so it was a good introduction to racing. With the pee-wee division, I got to be on the track to catch the riders as they came down the 'whoopsies' or over the hills. So I hope I got some pictures he'll be happy with. As soon as soccer was finished I scurried my little behin...
