My Sweet Husband and His Hoopty

Image
Due to the nature of my many jobs, which have mostly been in outside sales, I've always had a reliable car that was under some sort of warranty. Over the last eleven years of our marriage, we've been to the same dealership three times and ended up driving off the lot with something moderate but reliable for me. How many men would sacrifice every single time to give their wives the only good car?  Not many I've ever known of.  However, that's just what mine does. He just called me a few seconds ago, as he was trying to access the highway.  He was clearly disturbed!  He explained that the car behind him zipped up and around him while the driver was flipping him off... all because my husband's car was going too slow.  I felt so bad for him.  He said he pulled up alongside the driver and motioned as if to say - 'are you flipping me off?'  The driver blatantly flipped him off again and punched the gas. All these years, my husband has driven the ve...

Butt of All Jokes

Today was a big teaching moment for my boy.  I told the truth about something that put me in a very uncomfortable position. I think we've all been there ... Something happens that could be considered a white lie that if under normal circumstances could slide, because if no one ever knows about it - then you don't really have to own up to it. However, when you're a parent you are always under constant supervision. Little eyes and ears are ever-present, ready to soak in every word you utter and action you display. I've always walked a pretty straight line so that my son would not have to question my motives or actions, but no one is perfect. Everyone messes up...and a smart parent will use it as a teaching moment. Long story short, I told a white lie.  And no one would be the wiser if I kept to myself, except my son knew about it.  And even though I didn't blatantly lie to anyone and it wasn't a harmful untruth, I still did not need to set a low standard ...

Who could resist?

Okay so I'm a typical mom. I have to brag on my boy. He made me a birthday card last night that read so beautifully. And not to take anything away from his heartfelt words, but part of the reason he did it was to make sure his card read better than my husband's card did - because my husband's card made me cry. Little T wanted to beat his dad out! (Okay this part made my heart smile....what mom doesn't love that from their child?) Okay, I'll retype the inside as it may be hard to read: For my very precious (and most beautiful) mother :) I say Happy Birthday to the prettiest girl on earth. -- your son :) On the back, he'd outlined his hand, and put T T cards inside. This was his logo. He also drew a sheet of chore coupons, to be redeemed. There were nine to the page, with cut lines drawn. It came with its own bar code and pricing of $5.00. This was listed on the back, so if I wanted to buy more in the future I could. And of course, it...

A very long journey

During the process of writing 'Finding Kylie' I got a lot of rejection letters.  No one wants to look at you unless you're a well-known name.  No one wants to read anything you send no matter if it's in the correct format or not.  So you jump through hoops to keep submitting in the perfect forms per each agency or pub house, and in the end, you get a form letter telling you 'Even though you've got a great talent - you're just not right for our organization.' Translation? I didn't even look at what you sent, but I did file it in the trash ... right after my assistant looked at the return address to be able to address this form letter. I was encouraged at each rejection letter - as that meant that was one more time I was closer to my yes .  I've saved each one.  So that when I have my own name in the industry, I can politely write them back and say thank you for the amazing encouragement.  And I mean that last statement with utmost sincerity!...

The Talk

So how do you prepare to have certain talks with your child as they grow up?  As a mother, I certainly never expected to have certain conversations by the age of 5, 6, and 7, but life experiences have a way of opening up a curious child's mind to a ton of questions.  And my motto is: 'If they're old enough to ask, they're old enough for the truth'.  For one thing, I'd rather my child know he can trust me for the little but pertinent questions as they pop up in life.  It will allow him to see that he can definitely count on me for the bigger stuff on life's highway...especially when it gets bumpy.  And it will! SO about eight months ago, he asks me why our puppy needed to get fixed.  It was a simple enough question. I responded that it was to keep her from having any unwanted babies. He thought about it for a second and said, 'But mom if we keep her away from other dogs, why do we still need to get her fixed.  She won't have puppies if she's ...

Hot Babes in Bikinis

If I were a dude, today would have been heaven ... minus the 30 to 40 degree temperatures. Early this morning, we met two bikini-clad models at the lake to shoot months, January and July, for the new KRXO Classic Rock calendar.  The models were troopers.  I know if I was freezing my butt off in thermal underwear and sweats, they had to have been frigid with next to nothing on with winds whipping off the water at the lake. Lake Overholser, affectionately nicknamed 'Lake Holdercloser' in my college days, was the perfect location.  No one was out there and we had the entire lake to ourselves.  Other than an occasional looker and one police officer that had to stop by to 'inspect' the shoot, we were totally alone. And I fell in love with the two motorboats we went out on.  One of the high-end local dealers provided two amazing Mastercraft boats with every bell and whistle.  I hadn't been out in one in a very long time, and now I know why I had so much fu...

Giant Florist Strikes OUT

Image
Imagine my surprise when I called 1-800 flowers today and not only did they not have ANYTHING to cater to sports fans, but the operator I was connected to had no clue what I was talking about. I asked him if he had anything to celebrate the Giants winning the World Series .   His response? "Um, we have nothing to do with giants, ma'am.  I can't help you." "No, not Giants.  The San Francisco Giants.  You know?  Do you know who won the world series last night?" "Um.  Sorry we can't help you." I was in shock that a salesperson for a major organization didn't at least say, "Hey I don't follow sports, so I'm sorry I really don't know what you're talking about."  Or, "Our company doesn't have anything for any major sports occasion..." On top of that, I was surprised he didn't start asking questions to dig deeper, because maybe if he'd asked what the teams colors were and realize...
