The Night Before Christmas...

When our kids are little, it's all about getting them to sleep as every sound 'could' be Santa or his reindeer on the roof. It's pleading for a bit of shut-eye to get those last-minute gifts wrapped - the ones that were not under the tree the night before.  Each year, that Christmas magic wanes a bit as kids mature. You enter certain phases where they've outgrown toys and you struggle with what to get for them. You ask for lists, but half the time relatives don't understand what your kid has even listed. It's almost more work explaining what an Ocarina of Time is and why it's important than it is to just order it yourself and slap a "from Nana" label on it. The Christmas you never see coming is the one right before they leave home. The one where it's the last year before college and they've matured into this adult - this person who you always knew they'd be but just couldn't fathom it. It hit me today. With this being my kid...

Tonight as I type, I look back to where I was 12 years ago at this moment.  I had just married a wonderful guy, who swept me off my feet and we were dancing to our favorite band.  It makes me smile to think how far we've come in such a short time.  I was blissfully happy and knew we'd have a beautiful life together.  However, within months of our marriage, I almost lost my sweet husband.  Due to a sudden onset of food allergies (which happens to adults sometimes), he had an anaphylactic attack, flatlined, and was non-responsive in my car. At this time, we were unaware of the cause of his issues. All I knew is that my new husband was no longer breathing and it was up to me to figure it out. I remember driving wildly through and into oncoming traffic, to beat the clock and make it to the ER to save him. I remember having flashes of a future that played before my eyes, like a film, of the family we would never have... the golden years we'd never share. G...

working moms

I was leaving my son's mother's day out program last week, while on my cell phone. I am not usually one of those rude people, who talk loudly and ignore their surroundings. When I was walking to my car, I apologized to another mom walking out next to me. "Sorry," I whispered and shrugged my shoulders, "...Conference call for work...I have to be on here." She looked at me and said, "Man, how nice is it to be working while you're taking care of your son? I don't work, but some days I wish I did just to have some sanity." I smiled and nodded, giving her the universal look for I understand and we parted ways. I got in my car and again reminded myself how fortunate and blessed I was. I honestly have the best of both worlds. YES, I have to work, but I can choose how I work! We used to make a lot more when I worked an office sales job that had me tied to corporate politics sun up to sundown. I made money, but couldn't be a q...

flattery will get you everwhere

As my previous post mentioned, I'm fighting the crud. It's working its way out of my chest..thank the Lord! I have to go to a work lunch today with my boss and co-workers and warned one of them on the phone today that I wouldn't be looking very good...especially when I'd have to hack up one lung. My son piped up from the back seat of the car, "Oh mommy! You're always so pretty!" That made my day...no it made my week! To have a kid, any kid, at that age, who is too young to know how to lie, tell you how pretty you are when you've got no makeup on and feeling like crap is amazing. It was such an endearing moment that I had to call my husband after I dropped my son off to school. He listened and chuckled before saying, "See I've taught him well!"
